Hi,

I'm wondering if anybody has had to change the lead screw on the J5 stepper motor?

The reason I ask is that the lead screw is 8.10 to 8.14 mm accross the whole lenght. As Chris has mentionned in the manual, it has happenned that the lead screw can be flared at the end and in can be corrected by filling the diameter down. In my case I will have a lot of filling to do. I have an extra 8mm lead screw laying around and the 688z bearing fits on it perfectly.

I have 2 options, do a replacement if its easy or go the filling route.

I though I would ask before proceeding and screw things up (pun intended) 🙂

Good Morning,

Well, after a good night's sleep, I realized that only the end of the lead screw has to be filed down, just wide enough for the bearing to fit. The rest of lead screw can remain over sized. So this morning, I hooked the motor to an arduino and micro stepper. As the motor was running I used one of those credit card sized diamond sharpener stone to file the lead screw down. Easy peasy.

The J5 housing is now installed on the arm.

Starting to look like a robot arm!

Hi,

I seem to have the same issue, disappointed with stepperonline. The entire screw is 8.1-8.2 mm thick. Have to go filing something like half the screw as well..

..but as Richard mentioned, when you actually read the manual and watch which way the housing goes on the screw, only the very tip needs to be filed. 🙂

Hi Jann,

Glad to hear you figured it out before I could chime in.
