Problem solved! After close examination of some pictures of the wiring of the motor drivers to the Arduino shield, it appeared that my wiring was 2 positions displaced. After further checking I rewired so that instead of using MARKED pins 2 to 13 I used MARKED pins 0 to 11. After that all motors responded correctly. So I assume that the shield I purchased had incorrect marking. Buyer beware!
